Builder Grade Small Bathroom Updates: Before and After

Welcome to our builder grade small bathroom updates!

This is the before:

Builder Grade Small Bathroom

There is nothing more boring than a basic builder grade bathroom. And since we’re on a mission to design a home we love, we’re starting with the second smallest room: the small bathroom. We’ve already tackled the smallest room – you can read about our laundry room here.

Update #1: Add Knobs to Cabinets

One of the first projects we finished in the bathrooms and the kitchen was to add knobs and pulls to the cabinets. The cabinets have a little bit of space on the top and the bottom to fit your fingers in to open the cabinets, but I’m concerned that the continuous touching will remove the finish.

Update #2: Add Decor

Add Decor to Builders Grade Bathroom

I spent time shopping for a little something extra to spruce up the counter. I found the apothecary jar with a pump for the soap at Target. The concrete oval trinket tray is large enough to hold two soap jars and also catches any of the soap drippings.

I added a candle in a ceramic jar. Although the candle a shiny surface, I picked up the ceramic vase to match (but it is a matte surface). I ordered the artificial grey pampas grass from Amazon. It is much larger than I expected, but I think it adds enough character.

Update #3: Paint Walls and Trim

White Walls and Grey Trim

It took me almost a year to finish painting the entire house. I started in the small bathroom because it is a very small room and doesn’t have any natural light. We discovered how dark the house is because of the tan paint.

We need to paint! I picked out six different whites to test on the wall. We needed to find the best white to reflect light and make the space feel larger.

Once I decided the best white, I picked out three types of grey. I wanted something that is a cool tone.

Update #4: New Hardware

Black Hardware

Since I went with grey trim, I wanted a contrast with new hardware on the door. I chose matte black hinges and matte black door knobs.

Update #5: New Mirror

New Mirror

I picked out the black metal framed bathroom mirror from Amazon. It has a 2 inch edge that gives it a simple, yet noticeably modern design. They have several sizes so I can order a matching mirror in a larger size for the primary bathroom.

The Tehome mirror is carefully constructed with premium quality stainless steel and wood backing, which makes this super durable. It also has holes to hang either vertically or horizontally.

Update #6: Shower Curtain

Shower Curtain

I ordered these panana striped shower curtain from Target. It’s simple, yet offers an elegant striped design with white and blue. I like the little tassels!

Update #7: Rugs

I added a rug to place in front of the sink, but I also added a shower mat for the tub when you’re getting out. It helps with any water dripping!
