Wisdom Panel Dog DNA Kit Review

I ordered a Wisdom Panel to find out more about Hank and Enzo.

We’ve had Hank for 6 months at the time I ordered the Wisdom Panel. I thought I should know more about him by now.

We adopted Hank from the Humane Society of North Texas in December. His breed was listed as a shepherd mix. We found Enzo on the streets, so learning more about our new dog was something we were both interested in.

We are thoroughly certain that Hank is some kind of mix, but definitely a black mouth cur and Enzo is a shepherd of some sort.

How Wisdom Panel Works

The dog DNA collection kit is super easy to use. All it took was two swabs in Hank’s mouth, seal it up, and ship it back!

  1. Step 1: Swab just 15 seconds to gather a DNA sample.
  2. Step 2: Send your sample to our lab using the prepaid mailer.
  3. Step 3: Dig into the results.

The science: Wisdom Panel tests compare your pet’s DNA with verified genetic samples in their reference database to identify similar patterns. More samples to reference means more potential matches — which means more accurate results.

Not 100% accurate – The Wisdom Panel 3.0 Breed Identification Dog DNA Test Kit does not test for Black Mouth Curs.

Hank is all clear for MDR1 medication sensitivity.

The MDR1 gene mutation causes a defect to a drug pumping protein that plays an important role in limiting drug absorption and distribution (particularly to the brain). Dogs with the MDR1 mutation may have severe adverse reactions to some commonly used medications.
